I hope you are all doing well. I am so happy to be posting again and I have a lot of catching up to do. I have not worked on miniatures since December. Since then we spent every free minute working on our bathroom renovation. We did most of the work and it was a difficult experience. We only have the one bath/ shower in the house, so we had to go shower at my mom's every night for 12 weeks in the middle of winter. At one point the toilet in the basement powder room broke and we went 24 hours without a toilet. I could go on and on, but yesterday, except for touch ups and little things, the bathroom renovation came to an end.
Before (I swear it was like this when we bought the house)
We got rid of the 3 piece acrylic shower because it felt like a cave, we knocked down the closet for the washer and drier which we moved downstairs...in fact the only thing that did not change was the placement of the toilet...
After
It is hard to tell but the cabinets are a dark shade of purple. I designed the cabinets so it was great to see it come to life...however I don't ever want to tile or use epoxy grout again!!! At one point I think I had a bit of a mental breakdown. I was feeling quite flat which is when I stopped commenting on your blogs for a while. Sorry, It was a really bad patch but now I am feeling great and ready to catch up!
Back to Miniatures
The last miniature related work I did was getting the manor ready for an article in Doll's House magazine. I was so proud of the beautiful article which was in the June issue. Thank you again everyone who participated in putting it together.
Now that real life renovations are over, I can finally get back to the important things: my new wing for the manor. I have been working on the plans since it was all I could do, but I will talk more about that in my next post. I have been saving up to purchase the elements I wanted from Sue Cook, for the Ballroom and Library, and last week my order finally arrived safe and sound!
The 2 rooms will have over 180 plaster items: 17 in the library and the rest in the ballroom. I asked poor Sue Cook so many questions and she sent me many answers, suggestions and pictures to make sure I was happy with my purchase. It was a real pleasure to do business with her. If you read this, thank you Sue! I prefer waiting until a room is done to show you pictures, but since it will take a while to build the structure and get the floors done...so much flooring to do, sigh... I figured I'd give you a sneak peak:
These are the library items:
And here are a few set up pictures of the ballroom walls and ceiling:
For now, that's all you'll get to see. They are big rooms and there I say it, a little complicated in design, so it might be a while before my next post...but not as long as last time I promise. Wish me luck...and patience!
Birthday Presents
The first week of May was my birthday. I ate an obscene amount of cheesecake and I was spoiled more then ever. One of my favorite miniature artists is Randall Zadar. Jo and our families bought me the second one in the picture below, Indian Lovers. I pre-ordered the third one, Center Stage, for myself. When the time came to pay for Center Stage I decided at the last minute to add the fourth figurine in the picture, Mother and Firstborn. I was told they did not think they had any left. when I walked through the front door that evening Jo said "you had to be greedy, didn't you?" He had contacted Shoalts Collectibles and asked them to put the figurine in the box with my order as a surprise. He won big husband points! Being a gentleman, I let him pay for it and replaced it with the first one in the picture, Music Lesson!
I have several of his pieces throughout the manor, but I think I might assemble them for display in the new library.
Montreal Miniature Show
The end of March was the Montreal miniature show. Martha, Julie and Brian came over on the Friday before the show and we had a lovely visit. It really is my favorite part of the show. I was watching my budget for my Sue Cook order, but I still wanted to enjoy myself at the show and found some great pieces.
These I found at Martha Mclean's table. I love her flowers (Daffodils are one of my favorites) and she always has amazing pieces for sale. |
These I found at Julie's table, Westwinds Miniatures. I can never get great pictures of Julie's work! The painting on the glass pieces is phenomenal! |
These I found at an estate sale table and thought they would be perfect in an English manor. |
and these were presents. |
And that is all I have to say for the moment. It was a hard 6 months but now when I look at the bathroom, I think it was worth it. I need another 2 weeks to clean my house...so much dust... and then let the manor renovations begin!
I wish you all the best my friends and look forward to seeing your next posts. Keep the amazing work coming
Giac
Wow! When I saw the "before" bathroom, I thought, "I wish my bathroom looked that good." Then I saw your after version--Woowee! It totally pops! Great work! Congrats on your magazine publication and on your gorgeous gifts. I love your finds from the show. The estate sale pieces are especially fun! Glad to have you back, Giac! xo Jennifer
ReplyDeleteBonjour Giac,
WOW! Obviously your talent for building and design are every bit as fantastic in 1: 1 scale as they are in miniature. What a nightmare that epoxy/grout stuff must be. I am glad to hear you are feeling better.
ReplyDeleteThat is a big Sue Cook order! Her pieces are beautiful. It is good to hear she was so helpful with your questions.
I look forward to watching the new wing take shape. No matter how slowly.
Congratulations on all your great new miniatures
Hi Ciac!
ReplyDeleteCongratulations:
... for the beautiful and elegant Bathroom! It is gorgeous!
... for your Birthday! and Lovely gifts! Also for the excellent finds from the show!
... for being publlished! I wish I could buy that special issue of the magazine!
All the pieces for the library and for the the ballroom walls and ceiling look beautiful! I am sure you'll have something very attractive to show us after finishing all those items into their places!
Good to have you back! :)
Hugs
Kikka
The bathroom looks bigger and much better I think. So it was worth all the waiting. But boy, it seems you had to wait for a looong time!
ReplyDeleteCongratulation on being published! So well deserved! And I hope they will publish your works much often. :)
Your gifts and finds look great and I can't wait to see anything of the new wing!:)
Big hug,
Ewa
Hi Giac! Although your bathroom gave you so much problems, the end result is absolutely beautiful, your own fantastic design, how cool :D! I'm sorry to hear that you nearly had a mental breakdown and wanted to give up because of all the troubles that the renovation you gave. But from now: enjoy your relaxing shower in such a wonderful room ;)!
ReplyDeleteIt's so good to see you back with new plans, such beautiful gifts and purchases, I adore those porcelain figurines, they are awesome.
Congratulations on being published, it's so well deserved, my friend!
I can't wait to see your progress on the new wing of the manor!
Take care. Hugs, Ilona
Hi Giac!
ReplyDeleteI agree with Jennifer about before, that "I wish my bathroom looked that good" too :-)). But new bathroom ... is perfect! love these colors, green is the ideal accent. I imagine how much job needed this project, because I'm settling now in my new flat ( we begun of the kitchen).
Heartfelt Congratulations on your publication, it's true - The finest miniatures, is the best title, I enjoy with you!
And your details of ballroom intrigued me, I'm curious new project.
Warm hugs,
Magda
Wow alright! What an interesting post. That bathroom is fantastic! It is so up to date and very modern. I had to laugh at your old shower, not only was it cave-like but it looked like some kind of 70's time travel pod.
ReplyDeleteHappy Birthday and congratulations for being published! I love your Center Stage figurine. It is so beautiful. Ballerinas always steal my heart.
Looking forward to seeing all the Sue Cook pieces in their various rooms.
Hugs,
Sam and Isabelle
First of all, Happy Birthday, Giac! As usual, you have outdone yourself! The article was wonderful, but I do hope that people will go on to read the blog. Then they will see the real magic!
ReplyDeleteMini hugs!
Casey

eliane
wow, you have been saving it all up for a magnificent comeback epiblog. Happy Birthday, fantastic presents you got, great remodel, love the tile work, excellent shopping finds and it looks like you got thoroughly plastered!
ReplyDeleteDear Giac, I am so glad the difficult renovations are over... but they were worth it! Every day you will enjoy the changes you have made! (Long ago I re-did the only bathroom in my farm house (the floor was rotten so it had to be done!) we rented a porta-potty for the duration... and had to deal with foxes at night! There was a spider-friendly shower in the basement which was all we had for options! Whew! I am so glad that is over!)
ReplyDeleteYour plans for the new wing on the Manor are Ambitious and Magnificent! If anybody can do it, you can! We all know how persistent and creative you are and you are not afraid of a challenge! You have a wonderful family to support your "mini cravings" so gallantly! Those pieces of china are gorgeous! And Mathias will surely have the Master's rug and favorite chair beside the fire! He is gorgeous! As always, Your work is inspiring and I look forward to seeing the next progress report!
Hello Giac,
ReplyDeleteYour bathroom looks wonderful! It looks like a spa. GREAT JOB!!!
I love seeing the preparations for your new mini projects. Your little Mathias is wonderful, such a great addition to your mini family. Such exciting news having your work published. It's always a pleasure reading as well as learning so much for your blog posts.
Best wishes,
Hugs,
Morena
Your bath looks like something out of a magazine! I would have never tout of using that color greens! I like all of the places to put towels.
ReplyDeleteI feel silly now. I look at my small jobs and get overwhelmed then I see what you have planned, 180 pieces! Looking forward to watching!
Hi Giac, I seem to have lost my previous comment.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on the well- deserved acknowledgement of your fine work being published.
Congratulations on surviving a demanding gut and Reno of the bathroom. You now have a fresh and fab space to enjoy.
I can imagine the difficulties of going back and forth to your Mother in the winter weather.
On to mini. Things will seem so much easier in 1-12 scale!
Summer has arrived and all is well.
Thanks for posting
Regards Janine
You have had a very hard job with the bathroom,
ReplyDeletebut so nicely at last. Wonderful that you have
started with the manor again and congratulations
afterwards.
Hugs and love/AM
ReplyDeleteHello, Giac - I'm so glad you're back and in an ambitious frame of mind. Despite all the hard work and mental anguish, your bathroom renovation is wonderful. I would really love to see the true dark purple color of the cabinets! Looks like perhaps an eggplant shade, one of my favorite colors. Perfect with the green. Congratulations for a job well done. Congratulations as well on having your article published. Exciting! I'm overwhelmed by the number of plaster pieces for your manor's library and ballroom. They're beautiful. And I always have to laugh at the complete contrast between our so different methods and materials. (At least I can laugh about it!) I'm looking forward to watching your progress on the next rooms. And there's nothing wrong with slow. Slow simply prolongs the pleasure!
ReplyDeleteMarjorie
I admire your bathroom, it makes me dream...
ReplyDeleteCongratulation on the article in the magazine, it's well deserved.
I can't wait to see wwhat you're going to do with the order you have received. No doubt it will be stunning.
Geneviève
Hola Giac!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad that you're bathroom has turned out the way it did. What a wunderfull site. Thanks for showing the before pictures too, it was something else, a showercave ;-)
ReplyDeleteNice to see tha you've been spoiled for your birthday.
Enjoy your free time, after the 1:1 work. Can't wait to see you plans come together
Just like Jennifer already said - looking at the before pictures of your bathroom I was wishing mine would look like this... *grin* But your renovation was a full success - and as you always do in miniature you're also doing in real life... making something good even better. Enjoy your beautiful, beautiful bathroom, you truly deserve to... in my modest opinion bathrooms and kitchens are the worst rooms to renovate. But now let me say: Happy belated Birthday!!! All my best wishes... and wow... you received stunning gifts. Thumbs up for Jo! ;O) Your purchase at Sue Cook's looks very promising and so do your purchases at the fair - I can hardly await to see your newest miniature work. Oh, and not to forget... congrats on this well-deserved publication!
ReplyDeleteHugs
Birgit
ReplyDeleteHello Giac wonderful to see you post again. Wishing you a belated Happy Birthday. Congratulations on being published I read your wonderful article fantastic pictures too :) Wow your "new" bathroom is gorgeous I don't think you would ever get me out of it lol. Gorgeous gifts and purchases I love the pieces of china. Take care of yourself no more melt downs :)
ReplyDeleteHugs Maria
Hello Sir Giac! Methinks that your new loo with its porcelain throne is Finally worthy of you!!!! :D You have done such a Bang Up job of your bathroom renovation Giac and Jo and I know that it was even more labor intensive than you have revealed. First off, I LOVE the color pallet that you have chosen. It is classic and won't be so easily dated. The storage with the clever cubbies for your towel display is Wonderful as is the white tile that keeps everything bright, fresh and low maintenance. The lime green accents are the perfect choice with the richness of the brown. I LOVE IT!
ReplyDeleteI want to not only wish you a belated Happy Birthday but also to applaud your new show purchases and your outlines for the Manor Renovations. I had been missing your presence on the blogs for the longest time, but so happy to see you in circulation once again and I am now greatly anticipating your next post! Well Done Sir!
And a Big Hug my friend :D
elizabeth
Hi Giac
ReplyDeleteYour renovations are stunning.....as is all your work! The bathroom is truly gorgeous.
I can imagine the excitement on receiving your Sue Cook order... that's what I call essential shopping :)

All the best and take care,
Vivian
hi Giac! What hell have you gone through renovating the bathroom; the new bathroom is definitely a huge improvement though. It must be such a pleasure to use that bathroom now!
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you'll be working on mini again, and holy moley, what an amount of plaster you have got there!
Must be a lot of fun to play with, I especially like the fireplace surrounding or what is it called... like your purchases too and most of all like the fact that you are posting again... welcome back!!
And a belated Happy Birthday to you!!
Hugs,

Happy Birthday! Fantastic spoils! You made quite a renovation there, the new bathroom is wonderful. I cannot wait to see the beautiful plaster pieces put together. They look lovely already assembled there.
ReplyDeleteHi there Giac! Good to see your post! What a fantastic job you all did on your bathroom! The clean lines, the color combinations, what an incredibly beautiful bathroom. Unique as all of your design work is! I have always been partial to purple...I once painted our house purple...and listened to people complain for years...why? It was really cool! But out of the norm. :0)
ReplyDeleteI am excited to see your new miniature projects...the renos..they look elegant and exciting! That was some order from Sue! I only dream of ordering that much at a time! '
Have fun, glad you are back! Look forward to more fantastic miniature work!
Doug
So glad to see you back and with all that lovely Sue Cooke (and other things) to 'play with'. Can't wait to see them in action.
ReplyDeleteUN abrazo
Maite
Happy belated birthday Giac!! Glad you had a good one :)
ReplyDeleteYour new bathroom looks GORGEOUS. I understand the work involved in renovations...the horrible inconvenience, the number of ruined tiles before figuring out the tile cutter, the never ending dust and mess...renos can indeed make a person nuts. You guys sure put in a ton of work and it shows, it looks fantastic. Enjoy it, you should be very proud of how beautiful and professional it looks.
Can't wait to see the library, those Sue Cook pieces look scrumptious. And what lovely new treasures you have! Those are some lovely treats for the manor. I can see why you couldn't resist Mathias, he looks so regal with gentle eyes.
The bathroom looks great - I really like the green towels. And it is such fun to see your purchases from the show! I really enjoyed the Dolls House magazine article.
ReplyDeleteGood to see you're back Giac. Your bathroom looks wonderful, worth the hard work! That old shower you had did look rather strange and claustrophobic. Time to relax in your wonderful new one.
ReplyDeleteJudging by the huge order from Sue Cook, we're in for some drool worthy new rooms again. I look forward to that.
Your beautiful dog has a favorite name of mine too, I have given the Dutch version of it to my son ;-)
Hello Giac! Wow a stunning room you've created! The colors of green about really add a lovely accent to the room.
ReplyDeleteThe magazine article was well deserved its a gorgeous piece of work!
Some fantastic minis for the collection, I look forward to seeing them placed about you lovely house!
Welcome Back ! Your bathroom looks very "spa-like" You guys did a great job. Your birthday and show pieces will look great in the manor. I am looking forward to your progress with the plaster pieces too! keep up the good work. Troy

ReplyDeleteI've been feeling a little flat myself lately, think I have mini + real life burnout :D hope I get back on track soon too. good to see you back at the manor ;)
Dear Giac,
ReplyDeleteAmazing bathroom!
Hugs Dorien
I think I told you once while admiring your skills, that you had to be an architect, a designer, an engineer, an artist, to be able to do the work you do with your manor and I wasn't surprised at all when I saw what you did with your real bathroom. You are all of the above and much more!!!! The bathroom looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteHappy belated birthday!!! It's always lovely when people get you exactly what you want, like and love and it's so cute that your husband often gifts you minis you want!!! He surely is the best hubby!!!
You must have been so excited opening that package with all those pieces!! Wow!! I felt excited just looking at the pictures and thinking what magic you'll do with them.!! Congrats for been featured in the magazine...another great achievement.

Hi Giac. Glad you are back at it, but your absence and hard work on the bathroom was well worth it. You must be so pleased with it now. There is such a sense of accomplishment when you finish something on your home that has bugged you/needed finishing/needed replacement.
ReplyDeleteSue Cook's items are amazing. I look forward to seeing how all those parts go together in the ballroom and library.
It's great to see you back with the minis now that the renovations are complete - nice work in the bathroom, by the way. That's some Sue Cook order! Lots to play and plan with and I can't wait to see where it all goes. Congrats again on the article.
ReplyDeleteBonjour Giac,
A bientôt.
Muriel
Wonderful real life bathroom, love everything in it and, wow!, such presents and new minis !
ReplyDeleteNow I cannot wait for the new stage of your Manor
Un abbraccio, Rosanna

Hi Giac,
Happy Belated Birthday! Looks like you got some great pieces! :) The bathroom looks FANTASTIC! What a great use of space by moving the washer/dryer and putting in double sinks. I am sure you are already appreciating the space! I know how difficult a bathroom reno can be, especially with one bathroom. I bet you saved a lot of money doing it yourself though, even if it took so long. Welcome back!

ReplyDeleteHi Giac,
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful to have completed your new bathroom and know how thrilled you must be to have mastered it. Congratulations and it looks amazing. Happy belated birthday to you and love the figurine collectables and the cute dog Mathias. I now look forward to seeing the Manor renovations.

ReplyDeleteHi Giac,
ReplyDeleteWhat a stylish bathroom there is! i like the colors and settings :) Renovating is hard job! Now its hopefully time to relax and enjoy the good work in the bathroom.
Also the miniature ones are lovely! :)
I came across your blog and was very impressed. I am building a Victorian dollhouse in half inch scale and your manor has been a great inspiration to me.Check out my blog at cdmachen.blogspot.com I love looking at the pictures. I look forward to seeing more. It's fascinating!
